It turns out that just a few small tweeks in our genes gave us the flat faces and the deep larynx. This allowed us to produce more subtle sounds (papediepoepie tsjakka prrr oh yeah). Toen ik naar het diepst van mijn angsten afdaalde, had ik dikwijls het beeld van Orwells 1984 in mijn hoofd. Ik had dit boek ook nog maar pas uit.
Ik bedenk me dat we helemaal niet bezig zijn om de taal te verengelsen, maar te versimpelen. Het is een mijner grote liefhebberijen. Dat is het altijd geweest.
Engels is ook een rijke taal, maar we gebruiken de rijkdom niet. We gebruiken: OK, Cancel, Activate, Reboot. We gebruiken de taal robotisch. De lelijkheid die ik zie is de verloedering van taal en cultuur. Denk overigens niet dat deze verloedering tot stand wordt gebracht door een andere cultuur, alle cultuur verschraalt.
